SULPHUR SPRINGS, Texas – Make no bones about it, these guys aren’t clowns.
Saving lives isn’t comedy. It’s all business.
But the Professional Bullfighters’ Daisy Protection Bullfight Tour not only puts the terrific work of today’s greatest cowboy lifesavers on display, it provides a level of competition for some of the hardest-working men in the sport of bull riding.
And it’s just one of the main ingredients in the stew that is the Texas Heritage National Bank PBR Challenge presented by Priefert Ranch Equipment and ProTrak Trailers. The trifecta features some of the best cowboys competing in the Professional Bull Riders association’s Touring Pro event and the up-and-coming animal athletes in the American Bucking Bull Inc. Classic.
The Daisy Protection Tour will feature five two-man bullfighting teams, which will compete throughout the two-day event at the Hopkins County Regional Civic Center in Sulphur Springs. Each team’s work will be scored by judges who have been in the trenches before, former bullfighters who can understand the details that go in to being good at cowboy protection.
The PBF offers a tiered system of development for bullfighters who have the heart to compete at the elite level. Those involved in the Daisy Protection Tour are on an elite level, much like the bull riders who compete on the PBR’s Built Ford Tough Series.
The bullfighters are judged on a scoring system much different than other rough-stock rodeo events. Instead of a 100-point scale, bullfighters will either receive points or have points deducted based on their aggressiveness, positioning, degree of difficulty and showmanship, just to name a few.
But what may look routine to the casual fan will be scrutinized closely by the judges. Being in the right position on a cowboy’s dismount or engaging the bull physically might make the one-point difference between first and last place.
When it comes to the Texas Heritage National Bank PBR Challenge, you will see why it’s triple the fun, triple the excitement and triple the danger.
