Young world cham= pions win big at PBR Challenge

SULPHUR SPRINGS, Texas – The 2009 version of the Texas Heritage National Bank PBR Challenge presented by Priefert Ranch Equipment was a showcase of young world champio= ns.

Bull rider Austin Meier of = Kinta, Okla., and= bullfighter Wacey Munsell of Ulysses, Kan= ., are just 22 years old, and Crosswired is a 4-year-old bucking bull.

Meier won the Championship = Bull Riders and International Professional Rodeo Association world titles in 200= 4, riding most of the season as a 17-year-old. Munsell was 18 when he won the = 2005 freestyle bullfights that were associated with the Professional Bull Riders World Finals. Since then, he’s added several more, including the Professional Bullfighters Daisy Protection Bullfight world title in 2007. C= rosswired, owned by D&H Cattle Co./Wiggins, is in his second season in the American Bucking Bull Inc. Classic, which he won in 2008.

Over this past weekend, all= three walked away from the Hopk= ins County Regional Civic Center with the PBR Challenge titles in their respective events.

There’s something in = the east Texas= water that Munsell likes. Representing Team CNB Bank, Munsell and Chad Dowdy of Bristo= w, Okla.= , stood above a crowd of elite athletes to win the PBF Daisy Protection Bullfight T= our event, earning $3,500 in the process. The tandem finished with 340 points o= ver two nights of competition to outlast the reigning PBF world champs – = Andy Burelle of Ardmore, Okla., and Dusty Tuckness of Meeteetse, Wyo., representing Team Texas Heritage National Bank – by just three points= .

In the two-year history of = the PBR Challenge in Sulphur Springs, Munsell has won the championship twice; last year, he was teamed with fellow Kansan Sam Gress.

Burelle and Tuckness seemed= to be in top form in winning the opening round, securing 174 points and earning t= he $2,000 first-place round payout. But Team CNB Bank bounced back big on the second night, scoring an event-high 178 points and earning the crown.

Tuckness, 23, earned the prestigious TwoBulls Most Valuable Player honor, which was voted upon by his fellow bullfighters.

Saturday night also proved = to be fruitful for Meier, who opened the 2009 PBR season on fire. While he’s cooled off some, he’s No. 14 on the PBR’s premier tour, the Bui= lt Ford Tough Series, and is 15th in the qualifier standings, refer= ring to those cowboys who are trying to earn enough dollars to be among the top = 40 at season’s end and earn a spot in the World Finals.

Meier won the first round w= ith an 89-point ride, then added an 88-point ride in the championship round to cla= im the overall title, edging Brazilians Robson Palermo and Guilherme Marchi by two poi= nts – Marchi is the reigning PBR world champion.

Meier added $4,246 and move= d past $80,000 in 2009 earnings.

Paler= mo and Marchi were part of a stellar showing on Friday night, finishing with 8= 7s in the opening round and just behind Caleb Sanderson of Kissimee, Fla., who had an 87.5. Palermo and Marchi then scored 88s in the short go-round to take the lead in the average. Those stood tall until Meier solidified his win on the final night= of competition.

Crosswired is another in a = long list of excellent young bucking bulls that is part of the D&H Cattle Co. string. Also owned by Clifton Wiggins, the bull won last year’s ABBI Classic championship. Crosswired is the son of the great bull Crossfire Hurricane, which helped D&H Cattle land PBR Stock Contractor of the Year titles from 2001-06.
